Card Payments
We connect your point of sale, website and apps to licensed payment providers — so every transaction is matched to the sale it belongs to, and refunds and payouts make sense.
Payments are processed by licensed payment providers. Smile Software designs and builds the integration between your POS or website and the provider — it is not a payment institution or acquirer.

The payment ecosystem
Understanding who does what makes it easier to choose a provider, read your fees and know who to call when something goes wrong.
01Terminal manufacturer
Designs and builds the physical card terminal. Terminals are certified for security standards and usually supplied through a payment provider.
02Payment service provider (PSP)
Provides the payment gateway, terminals, APIs and merchant dashboard. You apply to and contract with the PSP.
03Acquirer / payment processor
A licensed institution that processes card transactions with the card networks. Often the PSP itself, or a bank it works with.
04Merchant account and settlement
Where your funds are collected and paid out to your bank account, minus fees, on the provider's settlement schedule.
05POS software integrationSmile Software
The software that sends amounts to the terminal, receives results, and matches payments to orders and reports. This is the part Smile Software builds.
Payment channels

Card and wallet payments at the counter or table through a terminal from your payment provider.

Tap-to-pay with cards, phones and watches. Limits and authentication rules (such as PSD2 Strong Customer Authentication) are applied by the provider and issuer.
The POS sends the exact amount to the terminal — no re-keying — and records the result against the order. Refunds start from the original sale, and every payment appears in your sales reports with its provider reference.

Payment terminal options
Availability depends on the selected provider, your country, the supported device, merchant onboarding and the integration method. We confirm all five before recommending hardware.
Fixed at the counter. Suited to retail and quick service.
Taken to the table for pay-at-table and split bills.
Some providers allow a supported phone to accept contactless payments. Availability varies by country and provider.
Self-service ordering and payment. Requires specific hardware and provider support.
Transaction workflows
Sales are the easy part. Refunds, splits and tips are where integrations usually break — so we design them explicitly.
* Tip prompts depend on the terminal and provider.
Settlement and reporting
Providers pay out on a schedule, net of fees. Reconciliation matches each payout to the sales and refunds it contains.
